Ohio Memory Newspaper Digitization Services

The Ohio Historical Society partners with local institutions to digitize their microfilmed newspapers. Microfilm duplication is subcontracted to Bowling Green State University, and digitization is subcontracted to iArchives.

This service includes:

  • Duplication of master negative
  • Pre-digitization material preparation (includes metadata collection and collation)
  • Digitization using the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) technical specifications
    • Structural metadata (places images in the correct order within issues, places issues in the correct order within newspaper title)
    • 3 images
      • Preservation TIFF
      • JP2 (for serving images on the web)
      • PDF (with embedded Optical Character Recognition [OCR] document to make pages keyword searchable)
    • XML files containing all structural metadata, title/reel/issue information and OCR
  • Post-digitization quality review
  • Loading and hosting on Ohio Memory (if a member)

Why the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) technical specifications?
Utilizing the NDNP standards helps to ensure long-term sustainable access for your content. It also allows flexibility in hosting and delivery options as the specifications is operable in a variety of digital library platforms.
