National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio

Caking-baking secrets from the Marion Daily Mirror.

About

The National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio (NDNP-OH) is Ohio’s contribution to the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America website, a freely-available, online newspaper resource providing access to:

  • over 4.5 million keyword-searchable newspaper pages;
  • digital editions of over 600 newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 representing 29 states and Washington, DC;
  • information about American newspapers published between 1690 and now (in the US Newspaper Directory); and
  • links to other digital newspaper resources.
NDNP-OH is part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) which:

Between July 2008 and August 2012, NEH grant funding will have allowed the Ohio Historical Society to digitize over 200,000 pages of historical newspapers for Chronicling America. Eventually, the website will contain content from all U.S. states and territories.

Pages from newspapers digitized for NDNP between 2008 and 2010.

Why Isn’t [insert newspaper title here] Available on Chronicling America?

For each two-year grant cycle, each awardee digitizes approximately 100,000 pages of its state’s historic newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. With millions of pages and hundreds of titles to choose from in the Ohio Historical Society’s collections, the National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio relies on an advisory group to select which newspapers will be digitized. When making selections, advisory board members:

  • consider a paper’s historical significance, research value, chronological scope and geographical coverage;
  • choose at least one paper from each of the 10 geographic Ohio Local History Alliance (OHIOLHA) regions; and
  • attempt to select papers that best represent the diversity of Ohio and its people.
